High Fuel Consumption
Variant 1
System
Air Intake
Symptom
High Fuel Consumption
Diagnosis & fix steps
LOGIC: Intake Air Temp (IAT) Circuit High.
ACTION: Check for a disconnected sensor. Measure resistance across sensor pins.
Red Seal field insights
Logic: "Circuit High" usually means an open circuit (infinite resistance). The ECM defaults to −40°C.
Variant 2
System
Air Intake
Symptom
Black Smoke on Startup
Diagnosis & fix steps
LOGIC: Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input.
ACTION: Check for an open circuit in the sensor element or the signal return wire. An open circuit mimics extreme cold.
Red Seal field insights
Physics: The PCM thinks the ambient air is sub-zero and aggressively enriches the startup fueling.
