Engine "stumble" or miss; Knocking sound under load; Increased exhaust smoke; CEL on.
System
Cummins 6.7L
Symptom
Engine "stumble" or miss; Knocking sound under load; Increased exhaust smoke; CEL on.
Diagnosis & fix steps
Cylinder 4 Injection Timing.
LOGIC: The ECM monitors the "load" and "crank acceleration" for each stroke. If Cylinder 4 doesn't contribute at the precise millisecond expected, it flags a timing offset.
ACTION: 1. Check fuel rail pressure stability.
2. Perform a "Cylinder Contribution Test" via scan tool.
3. Check for air in the fuel system.
FIX: Typically requires replacing the Cylinder 4 Fuel Injector or the high-pressure fuel line (if the connector is leaking).
Red Seal field insights
The "Tube" Trap: On a 6.7L Cummins, the high-pressure fuel passes through a Connector Tube before hitting the injector. If the nut on this tube is slightly loose or the seat is pitted, it causes a micro-leak that messes with timing. Before buying a $600 injector, try re-torquing the connector tube nut to 37 ft-lbs.
