Engine Cranks Long / Intermittent Stall
Variant 1
System
Starting / Engine
Symptom
Engine Cranks Long / Intermittent Stall
Diagnosis & fix steps
LOGIC: Startability Malfunction (Crank Time Exceeded / Low Start RPM).
ACTION: Check starter motor cranking speed (must exceed 200 RPM). Inspect primary fuel filter primer bulb for bleeding down air into fuel lines overnight. Test glow plug resistance.
Red Seal field insights
Fuel Drainback: P1604 is an overarching startability flag; failing primer pump check valves allow fuel to drain back to the tank, causing long cranking before rail pressure builds.
Variant 2
System
Starting / System
Symptom
Engine Cranks Long / Starts and Dies
Diagnosis & fix steps
LOGIC: Startability Malfunction (Crank Time Exceeded Limits).
ACTION: Test battery cold-cranking voltage (must stay >10.0V during crank). Check fuel line primer bulb firmness on diesel models; inspect for air leaks at the filter head or extended fuel drain-back.
Red Seal field insights
Catch-All Starting DTC: A historical flag stored in Toyota ECMs when engine speed fails to cross continuous idle thresholds within calibrated cranking time; points to air in fuel or weak battery voltage.
